Fantasy Novel, Try #400

Hello there,

I had an idea for a fantasy novel about Atlantis when I was 10 and wrote it all down, in detail, in a binder which is now long gone. Three years ago I wrote an opening paragraph to it. I have started and stopped writing more novels than I care to mention, but this idea keeps coming back to me. Last week I started working on it again thanks to Percy Jackson and the Lightening Thief by Rick Riordan. If you're into YA, that book is amazing and you must read it immediately.
Here is my opening paragraph about my "new" fantasy novel:

Chapter One: I Find Out My Parents are Fugitives of the Law

I found out that I was adopted and my whole life had been one giant ball of deceit in the second most humiliating way possible, in 7th grade Genetics class. The science teacher, Mr. Brown, explained that because of dominant and recessive genes, it was impossible for two-blued eyed people to have a brown-eyed child. Ernie Jefferson raised his hand and before the teacher called on him the snickering had already begun. He was easily the lamest kid in our grade and I was usually the leader of the cruelest jokes against him.

“But my parents both have blue eyes and my eyes are brown,” he said, as if he was disproving science itself. Everyone burst into a fit of giggles.

“Milkman,” my best friend Liam fake coughed, “Milkman!” Mr. Brown, shushed everyone and talked about how genetic mutations were rare but possible.

“I bet it is a mutation. Now everyone, did you know that it is not possible for two blonde parents to have a brown haired child?” Dark haired Ernie had a crushed look on his face and everyone burst into a second round of laughter, except me.

Liam elbowed me to find out what was up but I was just sitting there opened mouthed, realizing that I, the most popular girl at West Des Moines Junior High, shared something in common with Ernie Jefferson apart from our dark hair and eyes. We both had absolutely no idea who our fathers were.

Thanks for taking a look! Have a great day.
